Demography, Social & Vital Statistics

The Demography component of this subject area refers to collection and compilation of demographic characteristics of the population, namely size, age structure, ethnic and religious compositions. Social statistics refers to the gathering of data for relevant social issues affecting the Guyanese society. Vital statistics treats with the component factors required for the estimation of the population during the intercensal period.

The areas of focus for this subject area comprise demographic characteristics of the population, and statistics on health, education and crime. Demographic characteristics of the population include population size, age structure, ethnic and religious compositions. Health consists of information that speaks to the overall health status of the Guyanese people and the quality of health services provided. Education statistics captures the attendance of our school age population all levels of schooling. While crime statistics refers to reported serious crimes that occur within the boundaries of Guyana.

Mid-year Population Estimates:
Mid-year estimates of the population are done using the age structure and sex distribution of the most recently concluded Population and Housing Census as well as administrative data. These estimates are derived using extrapolation methodology. The extrapolation methodology also takes into account data on natural increase (births and deaths) and migration. These figures are derived from births and deaths registration and immigration records.

Health Statistics:
Health consists of information that speaks to the overall health status of the Guyanese people and the quality of health services provided. It includes information on immunization, number of health professionals, number of beds etc.

Education Statistics:
Education statistics captures the attendance of our school age population all levels of schooling.

Crime Statistics:
Crime statistics captures reported serious crimes that occur within the boundaries of Guyana.
