Georgetown Consumer Price Index –May/June 2024

The Georgetown Consumer Price Index (CPI) at the end of June 2024 was 141.70 compared to 140.38 at the end of May 2024, representing an inflation of 0.9 percent.
Food was the main driver of the monthly increase. This category increased overall by 1.9 percent at the end of June 2024, when compared to the previous month.
To mention, increases were also observed in the Furniture, Transport & Communication and Miscellaneous Goods & Services categories by 0.1 percent each.
The increase in prices for Food category was accounted for by increased prices in Condiments & Spices (6.2 percent), Vegetables & Vegetables Products (4.8 percent), Cereal & Cereal Products (4.0 percent), Non – Alcoholic Beverages (2.6 percent), Fruits & Fruits Products (0.7 percent), Pulses & Pulse Products (0.5 percent), Meat, Fish & Eggs (0.2 percent), Alcoholic Beverages & Intoxicants (0.2 percent) and Prepared Meals & Refreshments (0.1 percent) sub-categories. Increases within the other three categories mentioned include the Cleaning Materials (0.5 percent), Operational/ Personal Transport (0.2 percent), Purchased Transport Services (0.2 percent) and Goods for Personal Care (0.2 percent) sub-categories.
The increase in the Food category was offset by a decrease in the Oil & Fats (excluding Butter) sub-category within the consumer basket, which contracted by 0.5 percent.
Over the last 12 months, the CPI increased by 4.0 percent on account of increases in Food (8.0 percent), Miscellaneous Goods and Services (1.8 percent), Medical Care & Health Services (1.6 percent), Housing (0.5 percent), Education, Recreation & Cultural Services (0.2 percent) and Transport & Communication (0.1 percent). The Furniture category contracted by 0.9 percent during the 12-month period.
